What do you need to do to make a home-based business possible? One of the most important things you need is the ability to focus on it. To do this, you have to restrict yourself from so many other distractions and interests that threaten to get in the way of that dream.
In the book The One Thing by Matt Tod, he offers a wonderful short question you can ask yourself to find the next thing you need to do in whatever activity you want to grow in. Here’s the question:
What’s the ONE Thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
This is a great question to hold in your mind not just for your business, but for all aspects of your life. Indeed, the more you apply it to every area of your life, the easier and more fulfilling it will become. But you also have to understand how to apply this question correctly to get the maximum benefit.
1. When you ask it you really have to choose one thing. Humans stink as multitaskers. Building a home business requires you to focus on one thing at a time if you want to make progress. So, when you’re juggling a lot of different tasks to do you need to narrow what you’re doing right now to one thing.
2. You need to reflect on what it will take to perform the action and the consequences that come from it. You want your answer to have the maximum effect, right? Therefore, you’ll need to reach beyond the obvious things and shoot for things that might be outside of your comfort zone.
3. The metric. Whatever action you choose has to make everything else either easier or unnecessary. This is akin to the legend of the Gordian Knot. Instead of trying to untie the complicated knot, Alexander the Great sliced it in two with his sword. This removed the entire problem in the easiest way possible.
Once you decide to do the one thing, you have to put all your effort into doing it. All those things you decided not to do will try to assert themselves. You can’t let them pull you away while you do your one thing. Putting total focus on whatever you choose will get it done in the least amount of time. Then, once that thing is done, you can focus on those other things.
Think about how you can apply this simple test to the things on your to-do lists or when you write out your business plan. It could save you quite a lot of time and frustration. Give it a try over the next month and see if it helps you.
You hold the power to transform your life!
