Setting specific goals, taking focused actions towards them consistently and sticking to them is one of the surest ways to succeed in whatever it is you’re after in life.
Why? Because you’ll get clear about what exactly you want and won’t let any other distractions get in the way. You’ll imagine it in your head, you’ll go to sleep with that vision in mind, and slowly, but steadily get there, while enjoying the journey.
The best part of the goal setting and taking the actions to reach your goal is that you build discipline, courage and the right habits and mindset on the way. In the end, you not only achieve your objectives but become someone who’s ready to handle the responsibilities that come with the success.
But how do you do all this right? Here are some things to keep in mind when trying to transform your life with goals:
1. Know what you don’t want first.
I’ve realized that it’s quite practical to first define what you don’t like in your current lifestyle, so that you can clearly identify what you truly want.
Think of the bad habits you want to get rid of, the place you definitely don’t want to live at, the working hours you hate, the people in your life that put you down, your personal qualities that you aren’t proud of.
All that is what you’ll be trying to eliminate. Then, there will be room for improvement.
2. Work on one goal at a time.
Try going after too many goals at once, and you’ll end up overwhelmed, disappointed and having wasted too much time and energy for nothing.
It’s the same with focusing on one task when working. That’s when our brain does its best work.
Also, the main reason why New Year’s resolutions fail is because people try to make too many big changes at the same time. Not only that, but startups usually fail because there’s more than one goal the company tries to achieve and invests resources in.
So, to do it right, choose one thing to work on. Once you’ve achieved it, there’s plenty of time for everything else on your list.
3. Break it down.
In order not to get scared of how much time the whole thing may take and how impossible the big picture looks, break the goal down into manageable actions that take no time or willpower.
This way you’ll just concentrate on the first and get it done tomorrow. That gets you a step closer to the end result. Hurray!
An important thing to do from day one.
Don’t underestimate the power of tracking. That’s the only way to see how well you’re actually performing and it lets you see what can be optimized in your approach.
I suggest you write down what you did related to the goal every evening and think how you can do it even better the next day.
After a week or two, gather the data and analyze it.
5. Find an accountability buddy.
With life-transforming goals, it helps to have a reminder, but also something to push you a little when you need it. That can be a friend who’s after the same goal, or a community you join online with like-minded people. It may be your mentor, a loved one who supports you and is ready to help you achieve your goal, or else.
Now that you know how to set such goals, what will you start with?
You hold the power to transform your life!
