Human health is fundamental to all business. If you are not healthy, then your total productivity will suffer. It’s not healthy to keep eating vending machine junk food day in and day out. It may keep you alive and even stop your hunger, but it won’t bring you to the level of nutrition you need.
The best place to get nutrition is through whole foods. Whole foods are foods that are as close to their natural form as possible. Food processing methods have allowed us to create a wide variety of new foods, but much of the nutrition is robbed the original food in these processes.
Whole foods include:
- Unprocessed fruits and vegetables.
- Whole grains like oats, cornmeal, and whole wheat
- Beans and legumes
- Unprocessed meats
Basically, if your great grandmother would have recognized it as food, it’s probably a whole food. Scientists are discovering new nutritional compounds like phytonutrients that are often lost when food gets processed that are retained in whole foods.
Heating, grinding, and other food processing methods break down or remove fiber and nutrients built into the original food by nature. One of the main things taken out by food processing is fiber. Fiber helps our body with elimination and detoxification. Constipation is considered a Western disease because we don’t get enough of it in our diet thanks to overly processed foods. And we all know how tired and sluggish we feel if we can’t go to the bathroom.
On top of that, most processed food has additional things added. Sugar is quite common, and sugar is implicated in a number of diseases like diabetes, gout, and similar Western diseases related to metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a precursor to many diseases and it’s directly tied to sugar. Fruit processing methods like juicing can pump a lot of excess sugar into the body that a single satisfying piece of fruit wouldn’t.
Health experts have been beating the drum on eating whole foods for a number of years now and slowly these foods are starting to make their way into supermarkets and restaurants but are always easy to find.
Eating a diet completely made of whole foods can be difficult in today’s age. Overly processed food surrounds us however, you can take steps to eat more of the healthier foods so you can be at your best.
