Big changes start with small steps taken today. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Not ‘soon’.
It’s about becoming action-oriented, and there’s nothing easier or simpler you can do about it other than doing something right now.
It doesn’t need to be big, or to take time, or to engage your mind too much. It’s just important to get up and do it, be it for a few minutes, but to be sure it’s in the right direction. In this case, that’s your goal of becoming an owner of a home-based business in the near future.
Most people don’t even give this a try as the size of the project overwhelms them. But, in reality, it’s just a set of steps. What’s even better, you don’t need to know what the next steps are, you just need the first one to begin with. Then, somehow, the next one presents itself to you and you do what feels right.
During this process of slowly getting where you want to be, you’re forming a powerful mindset that’s ready to help you be an entrepreneur, build discipline, and take more responsibility.
So, in case you’re still wondering what you can do today to begin your journey to self-employment, here are 3 suggestions.
1. Do Your Research.
Then why do, to this day, most people never do it? Because they don’t like consuming unnecessary information, don’t like investing time in something that might not work or make them money in the future, and definitely don’t want to do it the hard way.
But that’s exactly what you should be looking for.
The hard way pays off in more ways than you can imagine.
Even if you don’t know anything about online business, even if you have no idea what niche you should pursue, and even if you’re scared of the competition and terrified of the amount of work and time this project might take, all you need to do is start researching.
That means reading about the basics of marketing, sales, creating a website, writing content for today’s audience, using social media and automation tools to your advantage, finance, and even the legal part of running your own business.
What you want now is the basics, because everything else will be learned in the process. You just need to get in the right state of mind now, and that happens by consuming the right information and distilling it.
Then, build a skill that’s valuable or brush up on something you can already do, whatever it is.
See how other entrepreneurs built a business from scratch, read about how successful brands and companies were started back in the days. Each story will give you ideas of your own. Write these and come back to them later.
Take a course in copywriting, or self-publishing, or programming, or web design, or podcasting, or video creation and editing.
Each of these can be a DIY project too, but you’ll learn other valuable skills in-between.
2. Get a Domain Name.
Wherever your digital experiments take you, a site will be your home and the foundation of your brand and business. So set it up today.
Get a domain name (if you can’t think of anything, just use your name, you can never go wrong with that), choose a hosting provider, and install WordPress.
Then, start reading guides and watching videos to see how to choose a nice-looking theme, add plugins, create content, and add important pages like ‘About’, ‘Contact’, ‘Portfolio’, and more.
You don’t need to start writing articles (or hire someone to do it for you), have an email list, open an online store, or else, just yet. Simply get your site ready today. The rest will happen over time.
3. Get Social.
You don’t need to know anyone when you’re just starting out, but you do need to turn networking into a daily habit.
Start by joining the main social media networks and creating a profile. You’ll be optimizing these over time, for now just use your name everywhere. That’s also where personal branding begins and it needs to be consistent throughout all your channels, including your website.
Then, start actually using these platforms. Follow influencers in your niche, comment on their posts, share articles you’ve read that you like, add a bio in the descriptions, give hashtags a try too.
You can also start building your portfolio today by doing work for free. Whatever it is that you’re doing at your regular job, find a way to help others with it online. Think where you can find people who need help with this. Start sending out emails, or personal messages on social media and offer your services for free.
This will be fantastic feedback as you’ll see what you’re good at, how communication with a client works and how to make it better, what needs you’re not answering just yet, what people expect you to do and how they react to the end result.
Also, you can get testimonials from them and add these to your website to build credibility. What’s more, this will give you experience in the niche, and then you can start charging for the same, only this time you’ll be more confident and better prepared.
I hope these 3 easy actions will help you get in the right mindset and start your home-based business no later than today.
You hold the power to transform your life!
